Sudarshan Pinglay is a synthetic biologist with research interests spanning development, genomics and cellular engineering.

He leads a research lab affiliated with the Brotman Baty Institute, the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington and the Seattle Hub for Synthetic Biology.

Originally from Bangalore, India he completed undergraduate degrees in biology and philosophy at Johns Hopkins University.

During his PhD with Jef Boeke and Liam Holt at NYU, they developed tools for the “re-writing” of mammalian genomes through the synthesis of large DNA constructs and their targeted integration into cells.

When he’s not wrangling DNA, he enjoys sports, heavy metal, masala dosas, and sharing the joys of a scientific worldview.
